Masala Dosa

Can you imagine the shock you get when you discover that the basic everyday breakfast items are not on your blog?

Well I am still reeling under the shock of the discovery!

So here is my basic dosa batter. Not the instant kind but what is generally in the fridge for use in case of an emergency.

Basically I love dosa so I am more partial to dosa batter so this container is a tiny bit bigger than the idli batter and given the fact that these batters do not reside in the fridge together anyone notices the difference.

Jhaal Muri~Indian State: West Bengal

Jhaal Muri~Indian State: West Bengal

Today we are blogging West Bengal on the final leg of our blogging marathon. It has been a journey where I have learnt new cuisines, remembered old and loved most of them.

West Bengal actually on the eastern side of India its one of the populous states in India.  West Bengal was divided during the Indian Independence in 1947 on religious lines. East and West Bengal… East Bengal was a part of Pakistan and is now Bangladesh since 1971.

Ancient Bengal has been the site of major rulers like The Mayura Empire or the Gupta Empire to name a few. Then it was ruled by the Sultans, Hindu rulers then BaroBhuyan landlords.

The British began their rule in India with Bengal. The battle of Plassy cemented their rule. The current capital Kolkata was called Calcutta   was the British Capital for long many years.

Naturally, for their clerical work the British needed workers the solution was to introduce western education. This in turn resulted in development of sciences, social reforms etc. This was named as the Bengal Renaissance.
West Bengal was the hotbed of Indian Independence period. We have many leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Gurudev Tagore, Bhankim Chandra Chatopadhya let’s not forget our own wireless man Dr. Jagdish Chandra Bose the man whose greatness is acknowledged by Einstein himself. Does Bengal rest its laurels on these past examples only no look at Satyajit Ray in films, Amrtya Sen in Economics, our President Pranav Mukherjee to name a few.

Being a foodie my interest is food.

Susla or Sushila

Imagine this scene.

Its summer holidays and you are at your grandmother’s place. Your parents are not the only ones who think about vacation at Granny’s and so you meet all you cousins.

In the afternoon when all are snoozing one by one you cousins slip out in the hot afternoon sun. There is no one around and all disappear in the orchards and climb high on one of the trees till then you are quiet as mice. Then it’s just masti……

That too upto teatime back home again all dusty, scratches and torn frocks, back to a scolding for the scratches never were we scolded for torn frocks or petticoats and tea.

How hungry we used to be… anything anyone Ajji, Mami, Maushi or Amma put before us we ate. One such afternoon I do not know who made it but we had  Susla. Funny name? We all thought so and that the adults were making fun of us but then we confirmed with another Ajji and it is indeed  a dish.
